Fostering Equivalence & Confidence Without Barriers
We believe in adopting responsible, transparent business practices that create lasting positive change across global conformity infrastructure. UKAB envisions a borderless trading landscape where third-party accredited certifications are universally recognized, eliminating unnecessary re-testing and duplicate audits while safeguarding public health, occupational safety, and environmental integrity.
The Four Key Strategic Goals
UKAB was chartered in the United Kingdom to provide accreditation delivering on four core strategic objectives that provide direct commercial and regulatory confidence to accredited bodies.
Integrity & Confidence
Building unshakeable market trust through transparent audit protocols, uncompromising assessor independence, and objective technical oversight that ensures both commercial buyers and consumers have complete confidence in certified outcomes.
Trade Support
Actively facilitating domestic and international commerce by reducing technical barriers to trade (TBT), streamlining conformity requirements across cross-border markets, and helping manufacturers and service providers access global supply chains.
Linkages & Recognition
Creating bilateral relationships and multilateral collaborative networks with international conformity assessment authorities, industry working groups, and professional associations to foster reciprocal acceptance of audited credentials.
International Acceptance
Ensuring that certifications, laboratory test reports, and inspection attestations issued by UKAB-accredited bodies meet exacting international criteria for worldwide commercial standing, recognition, and marketplace credibility.
The Values Guiding Every Assessment
Our operations, peer evaluations, and committee adjudications are anchored in six foundational principles that govern the conduct of UKAB officers, evaluators, and committee members.
Integrity
All evaluation and surveillance activities are conducted with maximum adherence to professional ethics, eliminating ambiguous interpretations and maintaining uncompromising audit rigor.
Impartiality
Decision-making structures incorporate balanced representation across economic, scientific, and technical sectors, ensuring complete freedom from commercial bias.
Transparency
Accreditation rules, fee schedules, and assessment criteria strictly adhere to international benchmarks and remain publicly available for stakeholder review and scrutiny.
Independence
Accreditation is granted with rigorous safeguards ensuring assessment teams are entirely independent of commercial consulting, testing interests, or stakeholder pressure.
Technical Competence
Lead assessors and technical evaluators undergo continuous professional qualification updates, ensuring audit depth and technical precision in every assessment discipline.
Market Awareness
Continuously analyzing international market trends, technological innovations, and evolving regulatory frameworks to develop responsive, future-ready accreditation schemes.
“The policy of the United Kingdom Accreditation Board (UKAB) is dedicated to enhancing the satisfaction, confidence, and trust of all interested parties, directly or indirectly, in our accreditation activities and conformity assessments.”
To fulfill this institutional policy, the Board operates against five primary non-negotiable strategic objectives:
Rigorous Governance & Impartial Oversight
UKAB operates under a documented governance framework in compliance with ISO/IEC 17011 and Publicly Available Documents (PAD). Authority is vested through conformity assessment bodies that pledge adherence to our evaluation criteria.
Board of Directors & Chief Executive Officer
The Board of Directors maintains ultimate fiduciary and strategic authority for UKAB policies, criteria, and operating regulations. The Board delegates operational management and execution to the Chief Executive Officer (CEO), maintaining strict separation between policy governance and individual accreditation evaluations.
Independent Impartiality Committee
A structurally sovereign oversight committee representing a balanced spectrum of commercial, scientific, regulatory, and public interests. The committee independently monitors UKAB's accreditation activities, reviews conflict-of-interest assessments, and holds full authority to review, challenge, and veto decisions to ensure total neutrality.
Accreditation Review Panel (ARP)
A dedicated technical review body composed of senior lead auditors, metrologists, and industry sector specialists. The ARP independently scrutinizes audit findings, witness assessment reports, and corrective action evidence before recommending the grant, renewal, extension, or suspension of accreditation scopes.
Secretariat & Scheme Administration
The executive administrative wing responsible for coordinating application intakes, scheduling technical assessment teams, managing surveillance audit cycles, publishing publicly available documents, and maintaining the real-time Public Certificate Verification Registry.
Understanding the Role of an Accreditation Authority
Accreditation sits at the apex of the global quality infrastructure. UKAB does not issue certificates directly to end businesses; instead, UKAB evaluates and accredits the third-party Conformity Assessment Bodies (CABs) that perform those audits.
International Standards
Standard-setting organizations (ISO, IEC, Codex) develop recognized benchmark specifications for quality, safety, health, and environmental performance.
Accreditation Body (UKAB)
UKAB conducts rigorous peer evaluations of certification bodies, testing labs, and inspection agencies in strict compliance with ISO/IEC 17011.
Conformity Bodies (CABs)
Accredited certification bodies, testing laboratories, and inspection agencies audit end organizations to verify standard compliance.
Marketplace & Buyers
Businesses, consumers, and procurement authorities gain verified confidence in certified products and services without costly duplicate testing.
